Hazel Village | Max Raccoon

"Max has a hollow tree behind his house. He has installed numerous shelves and cubbyholes inside it, and there he keeps cool things that he finds: bits of crockery that he makes into wind chimes, good paper bags he's saving, presents from his friends, jars of pickles and jam, etc."
Max is made of organic cotton with a brushed flannel texture, mostly gray, with black details on his tail and mask. His snout is the same organic cotton fleece in white. His ears are lined with cotton shirting. His eyes and nose are hand-stitched with cotton thread. He is stuffed with washable polyfill. He measures about 14" from feet to ears.
His shirt is made of blue and white cotton gingham. It closes in front with a velcro closure. Max says he wants it to have more pockets, but really he has a lot of bags in his collection and you have to draw the line somewhere. His shirt is removable and fits the other Hazel Village animals if he's feeling generous.
Maker Jane Van Cleef named her sweet line of woodland friends after the American Hazelnut tree: "a source of delicious nuts, magical divining rods, useful twigs for basketry, and food for caterpillars." She began the venture in 2010, and took inspiration from her favorite childhood toys and stories, including Brambly Hedge, Uncle Willy, and the Little House series. In the beginning, she made each stuffed animal on the sewing machine in her attic, hand stitching sweet faces on each one and writing stories about the little woodland community she created. The wild success of her Etsy shop led her to seek some help in order to offer the Hazel Village experience to a wider audience, while still producing the responsibly and maintaining their heirloom quality. Partnering with a certified organic and fair labor company in India allowed her to do so. Each face is still stitched by hand, giving every animal a one-of-a-kind charm.
